Diane’s paintings reflect on the interplay between sensation, aesthetic judgement and enjoyment. She uses 24 carat gold, sterling silver and copper leaf with acrylic paint on canvas. She feels privileged to work with expensive, rare and precious metals, which are exquisite to look at. The delicate leaf is a delightful challenge to handle, and she finds it intrinsically beautiful. She is fascinated with its reflective qualities and the layers and texture it creates through its unpredictable adhesion to surfaces. She exploits the unexpected discovery that the less uniform the colour and application of leaf, the more interesting and beautiful the paintings become to her. The contrasting elements of regularity and irregularity create a sense of movement around the canvas. When the viewer moves in front of the canvas, transient compositions are created by shifting reflected light.
